Deconstructing Development is a special series, developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to bring the fundraising community direct access to experts in areas important to achieving professional success. Each segment includes an introduction, followed by a 30-minute Q & A interview, allowing the WID community to write in with questions for our experts.


Gain important perspectives from two pioneering women in philanthropy, Janice Schoos and Erica Hamilton.  From the economics of what philanthropists are facing and how this can impact the organizations they support, to insights on how philanthropists may re-prioritize their giving, this is a conversation sure to provide the fundraising community with critical information during the pandemic crisis.

Erica Hamilton, Principal, Arbor Brothers


Erica Hamilton is a passionate tri-sector executive with over two decades of experience serving as a Founder, CEO and Strategist in the non-profit, private and academic sectors. Erica currently serves as: a Founder and CEO of the Women’s Leadership Council, a Principal at Arbor Brothers and a faculty member at the NYU Steinhardt School and the Institute for Nonprofit Practice. Erica currently serves on the Board of Directors for Arbor Brothers and is also a member of the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation Advisory Council. In addition, Erica also devotes time to consulting with CEO and senior leaders in the nonprofit sector to support projects that focus on her passion for advancing the areas of human development, leadership and DEI initiatives.


Erica has spent over two decades working in the private, non-profit and academic sectors creating strategies, leading teams and implementing programs in the US and abroad. During her time in the private sector, Erica spent nearly a decade as a senior leader at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup. In addition, Erica has spent over a decade leading large teams and designing and managing educational, professional and leadership development programs at several social enterprises including: City Year New York, Prep for Prep, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity and iMentor.


Erica received her M.B.A from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, her M.P.A from the NYU Wagner Graduate School and her B.A. from Harvard. Erica resides in Brooklyn where she and her husband are raising their two beautiful children.



Janice Schoos, CTFA, CAP®, Vice President, Senior Philanthropic Specialist, Wells Fargo Private Bank 


Janice Schoos serves as Vice President and senior philanthropic specialist for Wells Fargo Philanthropic Services within The Private Bank in New York. Wells Fargo Philanthropic Services provide specialized advisory services to charitable individuals, families, and nonprofit organizations as they work toward their unique goals.


Ms. Schoos helps individuals and families define and achieve their charitable objectives within their overall wealth plans. This may include gift and tax planning, multi-generational planning, estate planning, and the creation and management of donor advised funds, private foundations, and charitable trusts. She also works extensively with nonprofit organizations, advising in the areas of gift planning, endowment management, and board governance. Ms. Schoos collaborates with her clients and their other advisors to leverage resources and maximize the impact of their philanthropic activities.


Prior to joining Wells Fargo, Ms. Schoos spent nearly four years at National Philanthropic Trust, a national donor-advised fund. She has deep knowledge of gifts of complex assets and has worked with wealth managers, attorneys, and other trusted client advisors to implement philanthropic solutions. Ms. Schoos began her career at Chase Manhattan Bank in 1986, and as part of J.P. Morgan Private Bank, she pioneered strategic philanthropic consulting for families and their foundations. She left the firm in 2005 to gain hands-on experience in the nonprofit sector.


Ms. Schoos earned her Bachelor of Science in Business with Marketing Concentration from Marymount College. She holds the Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA) and Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP®) designations. A New York City native, Ms. Schoos has been involved with many non-profits including Gilda’s Club Westchester, The Grace Institute, Community Healthcare Network, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Taproot Foundation, and the September 11th Children’s Fund. She serves on The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s professional advisory committee and the Support Center for Nonprofit Management’s Leadership Council.

Yolanda F. Johnson - President, YFJ Consulting, LLC and President, Women In Development, NY


With more than two decades of experience in the non-profit sector Yolanda F. Johnson has successfully led fundraising operations for a wide range of nonprofit organizations, launching creative event, sponsorship and marketing initiatives that produced new streams of both contributed and earned income. Her fundraising expertise includes securing foundation, corporate, and government funding and cultivating a diverse major gifts portfolio. Yolanda is the President of Women In Development (WID), NY and the President of YFJ Consulting, LLC, which provides fundraising strategy and special event expertise for non-profit community. Yolanda has had an outstanding career as a performing artist, as a composer, as a producer, as an educator, and she has used her background as a performer to become a sought-after fundraising expert. Yolanda was also recently appointed to the Chronicle of Philanthropy Advisory Committee of national leaders in the non-profit sector. Tying together her life as a successful performing artist and a non-profit leader, she developed All the World's A Stage, a special workshop using performance practice for getting what one wants out of fundraising, philanthropy and life. She presents All the World's A Stage to audiences across the country. 



Jill Slattery - Director of Principal Gifts for the Americas, London School of Economics Foundation and Member, Women In Development, NY Board of Directors


With 25 years of experience in higher education fundraising Jill Slattery has contributed to major and principal gift programs at Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the London School of Economics and Political Science.  She is a graduate of Hamilton College and the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs. In addition to her dedication to the development profession Jill enjoys time spent with family, friends, and travel.
