Diversifying Staff and Board Leadership: What does it take to succeed?
Tuesday, February 11, 2020
8:30 - 10:00 a.m.

Diversity in nonprofit leadership has a proven positive impact, increasing creativity, driving growth, and improving employee retention. Diverse leadership teams - including both board and senior staff - are well positioned to connect with communities served and respond to external influences, including policy changes, cultural influences, and economic factors.
Nonetheless, there is a notable diversity gap in nonprofit leadership today.
A 2017 study by Battalia Winston found that 87% of nonprofit Executive Directors or Presidents are white, compared with minimal representation of leaders from Black (6%), Latinx (4%), and Asian American (3%) communities. There are many complex factors, including (but not limited to) implicit bias, interview bias, and a homogeneous applicant pool.
Women in Development is proud to convene a panel of leaders who have helped their organizations take intentional measures to develop more diverse representation at the senior staff and board levels. Join us as they share their experiences and recommendations for diversifying the leadership pipeline at your organization.
