A board member of a small nonprofit confessed that she was stumped when it came to hiring a Development Director. “Everything looked good on paper and the search firm said she was perfect for the job, but she wasn’t. How do I hire Development people?” An HR executive for a prominent educational institution said, “These are difficult positions to fill and I could use some help.”
The high turnover rate in the Development field has been a subject of discussion for over a decade, yet we rarely look at the situation through the lens of the hiring manager. This could be a board member, CEO, chief development officer…it varies with the organization. As members of the profession, we know how difficult it can be to find the right fit. Titles alone are confusing. One Development Director is another organization’s Annual Giving Manager.
This panel will unmask the communication failures when it comes to matching Development expertise with the right role. We’ll hear from a diversity of perspectives and organizations as panelists discuss what really happens during the recruitment process, right-sizing expectations of development positions, and the imbalance between supply and demand: both are high, yet positions remain unfilled.
The panel will be moderated by Robin Merle, CFRE; principal and founder of Robin Merle Associates, LLC; Vice President for Institutional Advancement for John Jay College, and the former Chief Development Officer of Hospital for Special Surgery.
